My Passion for Breast Cancer and Brides Against Breast Cancer!

As we embark on the close of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share with you why I am so passionate about this cause, and what I do to support the ongoing endeavors.

The first time I was ever exposed to Breast Cancer was about 20 years ago when a very dear friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer.  At that time, I really didn’t know what it was and the impact it could potentially have on families.  I thought wow, my friend is so young and she has a husband and a little boy.  I still remember her face, her infectious smile, her bubbly personality even in sickness and her angelic voice that could sing anyone happy.  Jackie lost her battle to cancer and my heart was forever etched with her story.  I didn’t understand why someone so young would have such an ugly disease but I knew all was well with her spirit and soul.

So many of us were hurt after her passing, but time went on and it didn’t hurt as bad.  Over the next few years, cancer would get closer and closer to me.  My dad’s oldest sister Marcella, Aunt Betty, as we affectionately called her was diagnosed with breast cancer and later loss her battle.  The sting was back, it wasn’t time for Aunt Betty to leave the family, BUT again, all was well with her soul.  Then the C word hit my household like a ton of bricks.  My only child was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome which is a rare blood disorder.  Brandon loss his battle May 2003.  After that my grandmother then loss her battle to Leukemia in 2004.  Next my dear friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I can remember when Angel called and told me.  She said Cher (this was her nickname for me) I have breast cancer and I’m scared.  I must admit, I was scared too…my friend loss her battle and that hit me like a ton of bricks too.  After that, I had two lumps removed from my breast, neither of which was cancerous which I was grateful for.  Lastly, my mother’s oldest sister was then diagnosed.  How can this be, both my mother and father’s oldest sisters having breast cancer.  This didn’t make sense to me.  But I am proud to say that Auntie is doing well and has been cancer free.

So I began to say, what can I do to support this cause and give back to this world???

That’s when Karen, who is such a sweetheart, reached out to me and said, hey I worked with this wonderful organization and thought about you, would you like to join team as the volunteer coordinator.  I  jumped at the idea and have been volunteering every since.  Brides Against Breast Cancer is a non-profit organization is committed to raising over $2 million dollars to fund free support services to anyone impacted by cancer.

They do this by holding their Nationwide Tour of Gown sale which includes selling new and gently worn gowns at discounted prices.  We just had two shows in the Southern California area and raised over $30K.  As an event planner, how exciting to be able to help plan the events, as well as, working with brides to help them find a dress of their dreams.  It’s been a blast.  I love the BABC team.

20130505_121656  20131115_191015  20131116_152938

I encourage you to check out more about this wonderful organization here.  If you know anyone in the Southern California area there is a show coming up this weekend.  Would love to see you there.

Thank you for allowing me to share my store.  I wanted to share, not to paint a sad story, but rather to:

  • Honor and remember those who loss their battle, they’ll never be forgotten
  • Celebrate the ones who are fighting daily
  • accomplishments and strides that have been made to fight against this disease

And that, my friend, is why I go so hard for Brides Against Breast Cancer.  In addition, I created a journal in which I donate a portion of the proceeds to support breast cancer.  See more here.

 IMG_5185 IMG_5193

The fight is still real, I currently have a brave friend, Nicholee fighting the battle and I’m sure you know someone who it has affected.  I encourage you to join the fight to honor those who have lost their fight, to support the ones who are going through the battle and to rejoice with those who overcome!!!

If you know someone who has loss their battle, currently fighting, or have overcome, please share their names and their story if you feel led to, so we can rejoice, celebrate and honor with you!

Take care and stay tuned for pictures from this weekend’s Bride’s Against Breast Cancer’s big event.

Savoring the Moment this Saturday

Hello, I feel like its been ages since I’ve last posted. Things have been crazy busy over here and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just got back from San Diego for a Brides Against Breast Cancer show. This cause has really been ramping up with shows in the Southern California area. We have several others coming up in the Los Angeles Area. It’s always great to meet so many wonderful vendors, volunteers, brides and often breast cancer survivors. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything in the world.

Next I completed silk flowers for a client in Illinois.  Her color scheme was turquoise and white and I had so much fun creating these for her special day.

20140409_162321 20140409_101410

I also got to plan a 60th birthday party and the theme was Cooking because the guest of honor loves to cook.  We started off by asking all the guest to prepare a small dish within one of the four categories which were Appetizers, Salad, Main Entrée, and Desserts.  When the guest arrived, they were greeted with a sign that said Mitchell’s restaurant, named after the guest of honor.

20140412_190105

Next I created menus for each guest that highlighted each of the items the guest chefs prepared for the contest.

20140412_172436

We had chef hats for each person and provided them with white dishes to plate their food to be judged.

There were trophies awarded in each category.  Each dish was judged on presentation and taste.

Lastly I created all of the paper goods in red and white diagonals to give it a cooking flare.

Also check out this cute little napkin holder I found to add to the décor.

I had so much fun working on these things.  I’ve also been working on my custom journal collection which I’ll be sharing with you on Monday.  I hope you have a great weekend.

Bridal Gowns and Body Types

Your wedding gown is one of the most important components to your wedding day. But how do you know if it’s the right gown? There are many elements to consider when picking a gown. Two of the most important things a bride must consider is finding a gown that fits her overall wedding theme and one that compliments her body type making her look like a million bucks! Whether you have an hour glass or pear shaped body figure, there is definitely a dress out there for you that will make you feel confident, comfortable and chic.

Most brides are not familiar with the many styles of bridal gowns.  First you want to determine your body type and then look at the gowns that would showcase your body the best.

best-women-body-shapes-i17

1.  SHEATH – The sheath closely follows the line of the body, creating a form-fitting look.  The Sheath, ,also known as the Column Wedding Dress, runs vertically from the shoulders down; the hem does not flair out at the bottom.  These dresses are body-hugging and work best for slim brides with balanced figures.  It is also suitable for petite brides – the sheath elongates the appearance of the body.  This dress also compliments those with a slim hour glass figure.  This dress style can also be used for receptions for the bride who may want to change.

2.  A-LINE – The traditional A-line wedding dress displays a close-fitting bodice, and a skirt that gently begins to flare away from the body, starting right below the natural waist. The dress is typically made out of a heavier fabric to help sustain its structure.  This dress works well with the pear body shape.

3.  EMPIRE– An empire-style gown features a high waistline (right under the bust), falling into a slimmer, yet not body-fitting skirt.  This is a very forgiving wedding dress shape and is great for many body types, but especially flattering on pear-shaped, petite, and full-figured brides.

4.  TRUMPET – The trumpet features a gradually-flared skirt and a close-fitting bodice that fits the body through the hips.  Most trumpet gowns begin to flare about mid-thigh.  As the name suggests, this gown’s gradual flare resembles the shape of the bell of a musical instrument.  It is very similar to a mermaid but it’s flare is more gradual than the mermaid.  This type is best for the hourglass body shape.

THE BALL GOWN – This gown is the most traditional and the one that we are most familiar with. It is characterized by a fitted bodice and a waistline leading to a very full skirt. The Cinderella Ball Gown is perfect for brides who are envisioning a fairy tale wedding. This silhouette pairs a fitted bodice with a full skirt that can either be one piece or separates. The ball gown is most appropriate for large, traditional weddings where the dress will be consistent with the formality of the event.  This gown works best for the Apple, Pear and Tall and Thin Body Shapes.

6.  MERMAID – The mermaid style contours to the body from the top to knee showing off all the brides curves and then flaring out to the hem.  This dress is perfect for the bride with the hourglass figure and those who are very comfortable in their skin.

There are so many different types of bridal gowns.  I have covered the most popular ones.  This post is just a guide to helping you pick out the perfect bridal gown.  The true way to find out what works for you is by going out and trying on gowns.

So what are you waiting for??? After all this is the most fun and exciting part of being the bride.

If you’re in need of a bridal gown contact me, I would love to recommend some bridal boutiques to you.  I have work with several boutiques and can walk you through the process.  Also, I work with an organization called Brides Against Breast Cancer a non-profit organization committed to raising over $2 million dollars this upcoming year to fund free support services to anyone impacted by cancer.  This is made possible by a Nationwide Tour of Gown sale in which they offer deep discounts on bridal gowns.  Click here, to check out their site for an upcoming event near you!

I hope you have a great weekend!

We begin the weekend with a VIP event which allows the brides to mingle with vendors and then we do the gown unveiling.  It is full of excitement and it is a blast seeing the brides whisk off to the gowns once the wall is pulled back.  You better get out of the way!!!

I also got to meet and work with some wonderful vendors.  This is always an awesome part of the day, because the vendors help set the atmosphere for the day!
